The Ghost Festival 中元節 is just one of the numerous traditional festivals in Asia dedicated to commemorating and caring for ancestors. However, unlike other holidays, during the Ghost Festival, it is the dead who visit the living.

Because the festival is observed across East and Southeast Asia, there are a wide variety of activities associated with it, ranging from live performances, to the burning of joss paper, to offering meals to the spirits of the deceased. These activities are all designed to sooth the spirits of the dead and avoid their wrath. In some countries, it is also common to avoid certain activitiess around the Ghost Festival, such as marriage.

International Day for the Conservation of the Mangrove Ecosystem is celebrated on July 26 each year. Since 1980, we have lost half of the mangrove forests. Some countries have lost more than 80% of their mangrove population.

Mangrove forests are of significant ecological importance. The tangled roots of the mangrove forest act as a nursery for many organisms, protecting them from predators, strong heat, and forceful tides. Apart from supporting rich biodiversity, coastal forests remove five times more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than terrestrial forests. Mangrove ecosystem conservation is important as it prevents coastline erosion, mitigates the effects of tides and tsunamis, and reduces atmospheric carbon.

We have a thriving mangrove ecosystem here at the Elling Eide Center. We are passionate about the conservation of this invaluable ecosystem.

Many Americans identify fortune cookies with Chinese food and culture. However, the origins of this delectable treat may be traced back to Kyoto, Japan in the 19th
century, where candy shops created small, folded crackers that allowed messages to be put inside. Some people believe this snack, brought to the United States by Japanese immigrants, may have led to the invention of the fortune cookie. Today, the majority of fortune cookies are consumed in the United States.

Known as the diet of choice for panda bears, bamboo is part of the Poaceae family—making it a grass, despite its height and tree-like stability. Phyllostachys nigra, commonly referred to as black bamboo, is famous for its ebony-colored stalks, or culms. It grows very fast and we've got some thriving in areas on our preservation. Come check out the 50 to 60+ foot stalks!

Musa ornata, commonly known as ornamental/flowering banana, comes from the banana family of plants called Musacaea which are herbaceous perennial plants. It grows well in moist, lowland environments with high temperatures and humidity since it is native to Northern India.

Musa ornata reaches a height of six to nine feet. What sets the banana tree variety apart from others in the family is its flower which has a bright pink hue, making them a favorite among gardeners. The fruit is edible but quite seedy for this particular banana.

Come see them growing at the Elling Eide Center!

Manatees are typically found in shallow coastal areas and rivers where they feed on sea grass, mangrove leaves, and algae. These herbivores munch on food for almost half the day, eating ten percent of their body weight in plant mass every day. With weights of up to 1,200 pounds, that is a whole lot of greenery! We've got a few swimming around today in Little Sarasota Bay.

Careful out their today boaters! Lets keep our waters safe and clean.

The Summer Solstice is the day with the longest period of sunlight. Notice how the Sun appears highest in the sky at the solstice; its rays strike Earth at a more direct angle, causing the efficient warming we call summer. Because the Sun is highest in the sky on this day, you’ll notice that your shadow (at local, or solar, noon, not clock-time noon) is the shortest that it will be all year. [Local noon is when the Sun crosses the local meridian (an imaginary line between the North and South poles) and is highest in the sky for the day.]

For those who live in the Southern Hemisphere, this is the shortest day of the year and marks the arrival of winter.

National Bald Eagle Appreciation Day is on June 20. We celebrate the day to commemorate the anniversary of choosing the bald eagle as the American national symbol.

Bald eagles were a rare sight until some years ago. Pesticide use, hunting, human-caused accidents, and other factors have resulted in a rapid decline in the population of bald eagles across the United States. In all, there were only around 400 eagles in all of the contiguous states in the 1950s.

It took some painstaking and strict conservation efforts to bring these majestic birds back from extinction. But thanks to the conservation effort and their status as a national symbol, the bald eagles are back in action.

We're lucky to have a few here soaring above the Elling Eide Center and are proud to be able to protect their nests and environment. Let's keep them soaring!
